Smoker Farms The Beaverdell micro-cultivator behind Master Kush Ultra

Smoker Farms grows craft cannabis on a 200 square metre micro-cultivation licence in Beaverdell, British Columbia. Husband-and-wife founders Jeff Aubin, the master grower, and Sheri Aubin carried a 25-year Master Kush Ultra selection out of the legacy market in August 2020, and now route hydroponic, cold-cured flower into BC, Saskatchewan and Ontario through Joint Venture Craft Cannabis.

From legacy grower to licensed micro

Origin & licence

The Cannabis Act opened a narrow door for legacy cultivators, and Smoker Farms walked through it without abandoning the thing that made the brand worth licensing: the genetics.

Jeff and Sheri Aubin built the operation as a husband-and-wife enterprise, pairing three and a half decades of combined growing experience with a network that carries more than 250 aggregate legacy years. Health Canada granted the micro-cultivation licence in August 2020 under the corporate designation 1180192 B.C. Ltd.

The licence caps total canopy at 200 square metres, which rules out competing on volume. Smoker Farms answered that constraint by concentrating on high-density craft flower, legacy brand equity, and one deeply refined genetic line rather than a broad unproven catalogue.

Sheri Aubin’s work establishing and running the enterprise has drawn industry recognition, placing Smoker Farms among the more visible female-led, family-operated craft producers in Western Canada.

A 200 square metre cap removes volume as a strategy. What’s left is genetics, technique and reputation. Micro-cultivation economics

How Smoker Farms grows

Agronomy & facility

Legacy technique, controlled-environment hardware. The room is engineered for terpene retention rather than raw yield.

Plants root in Grodan rockwool blocks over flood tables, an inert medium that hands the grower direct control of hydration, electrical conductivity and pH at the root zone. An automated Dosatron injection manifold delivers proportional fertigation, so mineral ratios shift deliberately between vegetative growth and late flower instead of drifting.

Water comes from a spring-fed source in the West Kettle River basin. It arrives carrying useful mineral content and needs little conditioning before nutrients go in. Environmental controls hold humidity, air speed and temperature against a target vapour pressure deficit, which keeps transpiration active, tightens floral density and suppresses fungal pathogens.

Dry & cure10-day cold-cure hang dry, hand trimmed
PackagingNitrogen-flushed cure and final pack
01

Hand harvest

Whole plants come down by hand rather than machine-stripped, protecting flower structure before the dry starts.

02

10-day cold cure

An extended hang dry under controlled atmosphere slows the loss of monoterpenes and the lighter aromatics heat would strip.

03

Hand finish

Final trimming is manual, which keeps trichome heads intact instead of shearing them off in a tumbler.

04

Nitrogen flush

Packaging displaces oxygen to slow oxidative degradation through storage and the retail shelf.

How Smoker Farms reaches shelves

Route to market

A micro-cultivation licence does not cover processing, retail packaging or interprovincial distribution. Smoker Farms built a partner network instead of buying a packaging line.

Processing & distribution

Joint Venture Craft Cannabis

JVCC and its DEALR division aggregate craft cultivators under the BC Black umbrella. Cured bulk flower transfers from Beaverdell for nitrogen packaging, tax stamping and compliance clearance, then ships nationally as BC Black Γ— Smoker Farms.

Extraction

Gorilla Gardens

The Okotoks, Alberta processor runs subcritical and supercritical COβ‚‚ extraction on MKU flower to produce a full-spectrum honey oil for the 1 g cartridges, with no botanical terpenes, carrier oils or distillate.

Pre-roll manufacturing

Straight Roll Productions

Co-founded in part by Olympic gold medallist Ross Rebagliati, Straight Roll produces the uniform straight-cut pre-rolls used for high-terpene lines such as OG Kush Stomper.

Sales brokerage

Veridian Growth Solutions

Veridian represents the brand commercially, pushing provincial retail listings and budtender engagement that a two-person farm has no capacity to run in-house.

Direct channel

BC Direct Delivery

The provincial Direct Delivery program lets private BC retailers source inventory straight from the farm, shortening the chain and strengthening independent retailer relationships.

Provincial buyers

BCLDB Β· OCS Β· SLGA

Finished product enters the BC Liquor Distribution Branch, the Ontario Cannabis Store and Saskatchewan distribution channels through the JVCC sales licence.

Market reception

Consumer dynamics

Smoker Farms sits at the join between BC legacy craft culture and the regulated market, and the feedback reflects both sides of that position.

What reviewers reward

  • Community reviewers on r/TheOCS and r/TheBCCS single out Master Kush Ultra for authentic genetic expression.
  • The gas, skunk and pine aromatic profile reads as pre-legalization BC craft, which is exactly the brand promise.
  • Batches testing above 4% total terpenes have averaged 9.4 out of 10 in community ratings.
  • Consumers rate it competitively against higher-priced flower on the same shelf.

Where the model strains

  • Lot-to-lot variance shows up in flower particle size and moisture content.
  • Some BC Black shipments have arrived with smaller popcorn structures at a premium price point.
  • Delegating packaging to an external processor splits customer support between cultivator, processor and provincial buyer.
  • Decades of vegetative cloning introduced genetic drift, addressed by the tissue culture reset of the MKU mother stock.

The fix path is structural rather than agronomic. Tighter screen-size grading before retail packaging would route small floral structures into pre-roll and extraction runs and protect the premium flower SKU. The resin density of MKU also points toward solventless formats such as live rosin and cold-cure hash, where margin sits higher and particle size stops mattering.

Smoker Farms questions

FAQ
Who owns Smoker Farms?

Jeff Aubin and Sheri Aubin own and operate Smoker Farms as a husband-and-wife enterprise. Jeff serves as co-founder and master grower; Sheri co-founded the business and manages the micro-cultivation operation. The company operates under the corporate designation 1180192 B.C. Ltd.

Where is Smoker Farms located?

The facility sits in Beaverdell, British Columbia, in the Kettle River farming district of the Okanagan-Kootenay-Boundary region. The farm draws spring-fed water from the West Kettle River basin.

What is Master Kush Ultra?

Master Kush Ultra, or MKU, is Smoker Farms’ flagship indica-dominant cultivar, a cross of G13 and OG Kush that Jeff Aubin has selected and stabilised indoors since the late 1990s. Testing records total THC between 22% and over 30%, with total terpenes between 2.2% and 4.21%, led by beta-caryophyllene, farnesene and geraniol.

Where can you buy Smoker Farms products?

Finished product reaches retail through Joint Venture Craft Cannabis under the BC Black Γ— Smoker Farms label, which supplies the BC Liquor Distribution Branch, the Ontario Cannabis Store and Saskatchewan distribution channels. Private BC retailers can also source directly from the farm through the provincial Direct Delivery program.

What does a micro-cultivation licence allow?

Health Canada’s micro-cultivation class caps total plant canopy at 200 square metres. The licence covers cultivation but not processing, retail packaging or interprovincial distribution, so micro cultivators either add a processing licence or contract with a standard processor. Smoker Farms took the second route through JVCC.

Why did Smoker Farms run tissue culture on its genetics?

Decades of vegetative cloning accumulate genetic drift and latent viroids. Jeff Aubin initiated a tissue culture micropropagation reset of the Master Kush Ultra mother stock, which cleaned the genetic material, restored plant vigour, and improved terpene expression and yield consistency across recent cycles.

What formats does Smoker Farms produce?

Dried flower in 3.5 g and 7 g, pre-rolls in 0.5 g multipacks, and 1 g COβ‚‚ vape cartridges. Gorilla Gardens in Okotoks, Alberta extracts the full-spectrum honey oil for the cartridges, and Straight Roll Productions manufactures the pre-rolls.
